Psalm 139: 23-24 'Search me O God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts; See if there is any offensive way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.'
I have been thinking about these words and what they mean in our journey of faith. One of my favorite authors, Gordon MacDonald, paraphrases this 'Reveal to me the deeper parts of myself that I'm not in touch with'. Seeing what is going on inside of us is a challenging process.
Last week in my devotional book Jesus Calling this line popped out. 'You live in a world that has been rigged to distract you'. How re-assuring to know that my distracted life is not uncommon. It just points out how much help I need. The challenge of the daily devotion was to not become discouraged by the difficulty of keeping our eyes on Jesus.
If we allow the Lord to search our hearts and point out things that are in the way and not helpful to our spiritual journey then the things that distract us will diminish and our ability to stay focused will be strengthened. So, the question that is before us is 'are we willing for the Lord to search us?' and, 'are we willing to make the changes needed to improve our walk with Jesus?'
Enjoy the process of revelation and growth. It demands our best effort.
