RECOMMENDED READING ON PRAYER
These books are available for loan from Pastor Shelley.
Classics on prayer:
Brother Lawrence. The Practice of the Presence of God. 1670 (?) This little book tells of a
humble monk's journey in learning to live in God's presence.
Ole Hallesby. Prayer. 1931. Hallesby has a very engaging approach to learning to pray
from reading the Gospels.
Andrew Murray. With Christ in the School of Prayer. 1885. Andrew Murray was a minister
in South Africa in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This book is 31
days of readings on the New Testament teaching on prayer.
Dutch Sheets. Intercessory Prayer: How God Can Use Your Prayers to Move Heaven and
Rees Howells, Intercessor by Norman Grubb. 1952. This is a biography of a man who
lived in prayer and through whose prayers God worked wonderfully.
On growing your own prayer life with God:
Anthony Bloom. Beginning to Pray. 1970. Bishop Bloom was from the Russian Orthodox
church. His writing on prayer is deep and clear.
Richard Foster. Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home. 1992. One of my favourite
Brad Jersak. Can You Hear Me: Tuning in to the God Who Speaks. 2003. Just so that you
know that there are good contemporary books on prayer... Brad Jersak has some
unique insights into listening to God; he lives in BC.
Frank Laubach. The Game With Minutes. 1956. Frank Laubach was a missionary in the
Philippines, and an international figure in literacy, and developed the “each one
teach one” (or the Laubach method) principle of learning to read. His books
chronicle his intention to pray without ceasing. I also have his Letters by a Modern
Mystic (1937). These are short books.
Henri Nouwen. With Open Hands. 1972. A wonderful writer on the spiritual life.
Leanne Payne. Listening Prayer: Learning to Hear God's Voice and Keep a Prayer Journal.
1994. My favourite teacher on prayer, but not a light read!
