    'Christ-Like Patience' by Pastor Vern

    February 3, 2017

    2 Kings 6: 8-23

We like things that are moving. We are attracted to action and response even though there are times when it can create even more problems. Being impetuous or premature is not always helpful.

     Patience definition

    • ·         Slow to speak and slow to anger
    • ·         Not acting hastily to disagreement, opposition or persecution
    • ·         Bearing pain or problems without complaining
    • ·         Quality of restraint instead of reaction or retaliation

    Elisha and servant2 Kings 6: 8-23

    • ·         The man of God gives counsel to the king regarding potential invasion
    • ·         Each time the king responds and is ready and prevents attack
    • ·         Opposing king angry at ‘inside job’ of giving up information and plans
    • ·         Report ‘prophet’ knows what is being planned
    • ·         Sent army in the night to capture Elisha
    • ·         Elisha’s servant looks out and sees that the town is surrounded, ‘What shall we do?’ vrs 15
    • ·         Elisha ‘Don’t be afraid, those who are for us are more than those who are with them’ vrs 16
    • ·         Elisha prayed, ‘O Lord, open his eyes so that he may see’ – vrs 17
    • ·         The Lord did and he ‘saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha – vrs 17
    • ·         Elisha prayed and asked that the army be struck blind and the Lord answered -  vrs 18
    • ·         Elisha counselled that kindness be shown and that influenced peace

1 Patience gives us the ability to look beyond the situation

    • ·         We tend to focus of what is in front of us
    • ·         There is always more to the story

2 Patience reminds us that God is completely engaged of this moment

    • ·         Each situation requires us to intentionally seek God’s help
    • ·         God is present and already working

3 Patience gives us the opportunity to show God’s grace in tough moments

    • ·         God provides solutions that we are not aware of
    • ·         God’s grace works wholesome ways in the human heart

Application as we come to Communion

    • ·         Christ-like patience is tested often
    • ·         Christ-like patience allows us to see God at work
    • ·         Christ-like patience is possible to find and enjoy
