    'Experiencing Joy' by Pastor Vern

    November 10, 2016

    Luke 19: 1-10

The world tells us that the root of joy is in the ‘stuff’ of life. But the Bible tells us that the root of joy is found in a relationship with Jesus. When we search for joy in all the things of life we come up empty and frustrated. In the ‘Practice of Godliness’ we discover the true meaning of joy.

The example of Zacchaeus can help us.

Zacchaeus – from joyless to joy

    • Tax collector – influential position – well known but not well liked
    • Everybody felt unjustly treated/victimized
    • Wealthy and people felt at their expense
    • Jesus came to came to Jericho and Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus
    • Zacchaeus was a short man so he climbed into a sycamore-fig tree
    • Zacchaeus watched as Jesus came towards his vantage point
    • Jesus stopped and looked up and invited himself to Zac’s house
    • Zacchaeus is thrilled – everyone else complains about this sinner
    • Zacchaeus embraces salvation and promises change and restitution
    • Jesus reminds us of his mission ‘to seek and save the lost’ – vrs 10

Luke 10:20 ‘Rejoice that your names are written in heaven’

Joy is rooted in salvation – our restored relationship with God

    Joy blockers

    • Sin – unconfessed or hidden – rebellion against God – Satan’s mission
    • Misplaced confidence – trying control circumstances or allow them to define attitude
    • Discipline – times of correction
    • Trials or difficulties –walking through tough times and feeling isolated or alone

    Steps to joy

    • Confession of sin and turning from sinful life – 1 John 1:9 ‘If we confess our sin…’
    • Trust God with everything – Rom 8:28 ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who live Him,  who have been call according to His purpose’
    • Live with the long-term view – 1 Tim 4:8 ‘…Godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come’
    • Give thanks in all circumstances – Jesus is with meMatt 28:20 ‘And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age’

Reasons for joy in the believing heart

    • Our names are written in heaven
    • Hope of eternal inheritance and home
    • We have the power of the Holy Spirit in us

Steps to salvation – peace with God

    • Sorry – for the sin and rebellion of my life
    • Please – forgive me and come into my life
    • Thank you – for giving me eternal life and a home with you, Jesus
