'Hope and Healing' by Pastor Vern

    April 20, 2018

    John 5: 1-9

In a fractured and needy world Jesus comes to offer hope and healing to disillusioned people. Often as we bear hurts and needs we don’t know where to turn for help. Our medical professionals can only do so much in our hurting journey. Today we want to pray for the healing of our hurts and needs.

We look to Jesus for hope.

    Background – vrs 1-9

    • Jesus is in Jerusalem
    • Pool of Bethsaida is a place where the hopeless gather as a last resort
    • All other options have been explored
    • People wait anticipating the stirring of the water
    • Tradition says that the first one in is healed
    • We don’t know how often or when the water is stirred
    • So one waits and tries to be ready at the right moment
    • There are lots of people there hoping – blind, lame, paralyzed

    1 Jesus found this invalid

    • Man has been disabled for 38 years
    • Jesus found him and hears his story
    • The man had lived with the reality of his condition for a long time
    • Our realities can significantly beat up our hope

2 Jesus asked him a direct question

    • ‘Do you want to get well?’
    • It is a good question because sometimes we get used to our circumstances and redefine what we want
    • The man replies based on his inability to get to the water
    • He has no help
    • His hope is affected by the lack of those around him to help
    • He has a desire for healing but no practical way to get it
    • Sometimes we define our hopeless situations in the same way

     3 Jesus simply heals him

    • ‘Get up! – notice the exclamation point – Jesus expected this man to do it
    • ‘Pick up your mat and walk’ – amazing
    • This man’s life is miraculously changed
    • Jesus offers us this same directive and healing

     Application

    • Do you want to get well?
    • What would you like Jesus to do for you?
