'In Search of Hope' by Pastor Vern

    December 16, 2016

    Matt 2: 1-12

The fourth Sunday of Advent points us to the manger with the birth of Jesus who is the hope of the world. The hope of the world is wrapped up in Jesus. It is that hope of spiritual salvation that the wise men set out to find on their amazing journey.

    Background – Matt 2: 1-12

    ·         Wise men from the east arrive in Jerusalem

    ·         They are searching for a baby born ‘King of the Jews’

    ·         They have come to Jerusalem as a result of following a star

    ·         They request information from the political authority

    ·         The request throws Jerusalem into a flurry of activity

    ·         The resources of the wise are reviewed and the collective wisdom points them to Bethlehem

    ·         Herod grants permission to travel as long as they report back

    ·         The Wise Men continue on to Bethlehem

    ·         The star guides them to the house where Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus are

    ·         The Wise Men rejoice at arriving at their destination

    ·         They bow down and present their gifts and they go home taking another route

    1 Hopeless – Isa 9: 2

    • ·         ‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned’
    • ·         The Prophet Isaiah correctly states that we were lost and blind
    • ·         After the fall in the garden we could not make it on our own, no matter how hard we tried
    • ·         God initiated a rescue plan without which we had no hope
    • ·         We were hopeless on our own

    2 Hopeful – Isaiah 9: 6

    • ·         ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’
    • ·         Hope was promised to those who were seeking help - The promise of a King and Saviour
    • ·         The stars stated the promise if His arrival
    • ·         The Wise Men were so moved that they set out - They followed the guiding light of the star
    • ·         Every day they went forward with full expectation of finding

    3 Hope filled – Matt 2:11

    • ·         ‘…they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him.’
    • ·         Moment of meeting Jesus – more than finding the right address
    • ·         Journey of hope that leads to spiritual peace and forgiveness
    • ·         They set the model for those of us seeking a Saviour – it can be quite a journey

    • ·Jesus is the hope of the world
    • ·Christmas is about Jesus coming to us
