    'Living for God' by Pastor Vern

    1 Peter 4: 1-11  

    Pursuing God’s will in our lives is an intentional decision that will impact our lives for the good.

    Our passionate response to the will of God is essential to our faith walk. Our faith adventure will lead us in directions that we did not anticipate and yet we will discover purpose and joy that we did not expect

    Background

    • Peter writes this letter around A.D. 64
    • Peter is believed to be in Rome and under scrutiny
    • Nero accused Christians of burning Rome and ordered intense persecution
    • Peter writes to the Christians of Asia Minor who were fleeing Rome and persecution as they scattered to numerous places as the searched for relative safety(1Pet 5:9-11)
    • Peter encourages them to remain true to Jesus despite their difficulties at the emperor’s hand
    • Challenge to be strong even when life turns out different  or more difficult than we planned

    1 Living in the will of God – vrs 2

    • Surrender areas of sin
    • Live for righteousness – right actions
    • We have spent enough wasted days – vrs 3   
    • Some people in our lives may not understand – vrs 4   
    • Some may ridicule and oppose
    • Accountability for the activities of our lives is required – vrs 5  
    • Live for God now and moving forward – vrs 6

    2 Living forward – vrs 7     

    • Live with the end in mind
    • Be clear minded – ability to reason correctly
    • Be self-controlled and intentional
    • Be disciplined in your praying

    3 Living proactively – vrs 10      

    • Discover and use your spiritual gifts to serve the church and others
    • Allow the generosity of God to bless others through you
    • Show God’s generous grace in variety of ways
    • Serving is the evidence of living in God’s will
    • God’s strength is available for all situations
    • Serving willingly brings glory to God
    • God’s glory and power is now and forever

     

    Application

    • 1 Peter 4:19   “So if you are suffering according to God’s will, keep on doing what is right, and trust yourself to the God who made you, for He will never fail you”
    • Living for God is the journey of a lifetime
    • Living for God is moving forward and being effective
