'Reaching for the Goal' by Pastor Vern

    March 10, 2017

    Phil 3: 12-21

The focus of our study has been the growing desire to be more like Jesus. The great opportunity is to grow up or mature in our spiritual lives. Our spiritual journey leads us to discover the joy of freedom and empowerment as we become more of like Jesus

1 Timothy 4: 7-8 ‘Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come’

Reaching for the goal – Phil 3: 12-21

1 Christ’s objective is to redeem us from sin – Titus 2:14

    • Not merely from the penalty of sin

    o   From its evil destruction

o   From its power to ruin lives

    o   From its downward spiral

o   From its dominion of fear and control

o   From its abusive treatment of spiritual life

    • Christ intents to make us holy
    • Christ intends to be Lord in our lives
    • Christ intend that we exhibit the traits of godly character

2 Christ’s reward is for us to spend eternity with Him

    • Paul knows his citizenship is in heaven - 20
    • Paul is pressing to obtain that heavenly prize - 12
    • Paul’s attention is focused on Christ’s purpose for him – 14
    • Paul’s eyes are fixed on heaven – 20
    • Paul is God-centered in his devotion/passion
    • Paul strives to be Christ-like in his character

3 Living with the goal in front of us – vrs 13-14

    • Forget what is behind

o   don’t be slowed down or sidetracked with past baggage

o   choose to let it go for a higher purpose

    • Press on

    o   strain forward

o   pursue with all of our energy

    • Goal is to win the prize

    o   take hold of it

    o    finish the race

    Application – celebrating Communion

    • Be thankful for the forgiveness of sin
    • Celebrate the reward of our eternity with Jesus
    • Practice Godliness as we live for Jesus
