'The Story of EASTER' by Pastor Vern

    April 13, 2017

    Luke 24: 1 – 12

This Passion Week has reminded us of the difficult road Jesus walked on our behalf. The crowds exalted him and then demanded his crucifixion. The disciples followed and then ran away. The atonement for sin demanded a blood sacrifice. Satan pursued relentlessly and when Jesus was crucified he appeared to have succeeded in defeating the Son of God. But the crucifixion did not tell the whole story. From a human standpoint everything that we knew, based on our life experience, seemed to come to an end.

However, from God’s point of view this was just the middle step in His glorious plan of redemption.

Easter Sunday completes the story that looked like it ended on Good Friday.

    GOD’S PLAN OF REDEMPTION

1 The Manger – God with us – Love

    • Luke 2: 10-11 “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord’
    • Gal 4:4 “but when the time had fully come, God sent his Son…to redeem those under the law”
    • John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
    • The birth of Jesus in the manger initiated a love story of God and his children
    • The broken relationship of the Garden of Eden was beginning a new chapter of recovery
    • God’s big picture had the plan of redemption already in motion

2 The Cross – Sacrifice for sin - Forgiveness

    • 2 Cor 5: 21 “ God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become  the righteousness of God”
    • John 10: 17-18 “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life – only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord”
    • The story of the cross is that there is only one acceptable sacrifice for sin
    • Jesus was willing to give/lay down his life for us
    • Jesus was not a victim of Satan, he was willing to submit and be crucified for our sin

3 The Empty Tomb – Resurrection – Life

    • Luke 24:7 “the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again”
    • 1 Peter 1: 3-4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the  resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you”
    • From our human experience death is an ending of earthly expectations and plans
    • From a heavenly view death is not an end but the continuation of a beautiful plan and future
    • Only God can restore life – resurrection  - followers took time grasping ‘He is Risen’
    • Satan did not see this coming

APPLICATION – The Power of the Resurrection

    • Easter offers us life and a future
    • Easter shows the power of God to change us
    • Easter is good news story worth sharing with others
